I just stumbled across this forum, and saw the posts about Dr. Choti and thought I'd tell you that this fine man literally saved my life two and a half years ago. Not only did he save it with his exceptional surgical skills, but I have been cancer-free since my operation at Johns Hopkins in Feb 2006.
I had Stage IV Carcinoid Cancer with significant mets to the liver. My local surgeon told me point-blank to 'get my affairs in order' as I would be dead withing 18 to 36 months. Well, guess what, he was wrong.
I spent hours upon hours on the internet after that, digging as deep as I could into my kind of cancer and who the Best of the Best were. One name kept coming up time and time again and it was Mike Choti.
I began my Johns Hopkins experience with an oncology consult with Dr. Wiles Messersmith at Hopkins. He is brilliant, and so far and above all the other oncologists that I had spoke with that I was basically stunned at not only the depth of his knowledge, but his passion for his job. I talked with him one hour and twenty minutes about my cancer - and when's the last time you got that much attention from a world-class doctor? I already knew I wanted Choti as my surgeon and Messersmith set up the recommendation.
When I first met Mike I was shocked at how easy-going and down-to-earth he is. Not to mention dedicated. And his staff absolutely revers him. Know what is nickname is? I do...they call him "The Talent" in the halls of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center. You could have knocked me over with a feather when he told me "I can help you, and I will get your primary remove " (the other surgeons said that was impossible). I asked how he could do that when others said it could not be done? He replied "I know where to look."
I had to wait for a surgery date, and be ready on a moments notice. You see, Dr. Choti is a very busy man. He's not an ordinary surgeon. Yes, he has patients, but he also teaches, runs his own research lab, and flies around the world lecturing to other surgeons on the Art and Medicine of cancer surgery. His schedule is packed, all the time.
I was on Dr. Choti's operating table for six hours. He removed 60% of my liver, my gall bladder, a dozen lymph nodes, and located and removed the ever-elusive Primary cancer site and along with that was taken 15" of my small intestine.
It was a hard surgery. Four days of hell afterwards, but on day six I walked out of Johns Hopkins and my cancer was gone. I do periodic tests every six months to see if it has returned, but it has not.
I would walk through fire for Mike Choti. He saved my life and was my last hope. I will always be grateful to him for my extras years I now have.
He's a busy man, but if you ever need a world-class surgeon for your cancer, I would highly recommend him.
