Sandy, my daughter was diagnosed on July 3, 2007 at 19yrs. old w/FHC. She had just completed her freshman year at college. She was already Stage IV and the surgeon's prognosis for her was poor. He removed part of the liver to enable her to eat and put in a feeding tube in case she needed it later. The lymph nodes were already affected as with the stomach, pancreas and aortic trunk. As it turned out, he could only get 1/4 of the liver and left the rest. Since then, she had a blood clot, ammonia poisoning and several bouts in the hospital w/high fever. She started out on Nexavar for a month which only allowed the cancer to progress in her case. Our oncologist put her on Oxiliplatin, Gemzar and Avastin and it did help to prevent the ascites fluid from building up in her abdomen for about 6 months. It also shrunk the main tumor slightly. A month ago, we discovered it was now in her intestines. She took Tarceva and Avastin for about a month but continued to have the fluid build-up in her belly. She has now started a new therapy--Doxil and Avastsin. We are praying this will increase her survival time. We live in Minnesota. I believe cancer is becoming an epidemic. She has been a fighter through this all and hasn't given up. It breaks my heart to see her suffer. What is happening, why are our young people being struck with this mysterious form of liver cancer. Why can't they determine the cause of FHC or any cancer for that matter. I pray for all of our young people suffering from this horrible monster. God be with us all.
