Hi Susie,
The hot intraperitoneal chemotherapy is a technique in which the abdominal cavity is heated to high temperatures through the introduction of heated chemotherapy solutions, resulting in direct tumour cell kill. Hyperthermia makes tumour cells more sensitive to chemotherapy agents. I've been told that they will use 45 degrees Celsius but the oncologists are deciding which chemo mix to use. They will do one flush during op, and possibly leave in drains to wash through for the next 5 days. The dosage will depend on what they believe I can handle. I need to have the surgery and feel that this flush can only help. Hopefully this will be able to kill most of the microscopic growths that surgery cannot remove. Or at least damage them enough to aid the traditional chemo afterwards. How did Ben's tumours get from his liver to his abdomen? Did he also have a rupture? This is my worry at the moment and am praying that the PET scan shows only localised spreading. I'm also a little concerned about scans, the last three Ultra/CT/MRI indicated only two tumours in my liver. As it turned out there was only one, which had ruptured and a secondary growth on the peritoneum (this was pushed into the liver not on it) with metastatic growths surrounding both. Will definitely question the validity of the PET scan, thanks.
I wish you and Ben all the best, I'm sure he's also questioned why this is happening to him and the uncertainty ahead given the rarity.
Warren
